Thank you for this sweet and respectful story. I hope it doesn't bring in hordes of visitors. These days, we take a risk every time we write or publish about a magical place on the internet. I don't see a resolution to this dilemma.
Thanks, Belle! It's always a balancing act writing about these special places -- I can't claim to have perfected it but it's definitely been on my mind since I started doing this all the way back in '06...
The good thing about the Amargosa Opera House is it's waaaaay out in the middle of nowhere, so people who visit really have to be intentional about it for the most part. But the Foundation that cares for these properties really does need some help and I hope it finds it. The hotel would be an incredible writers / artists retreat for part of the year, but the buildings need a LOT of repairs before that can happen, I think.
Thanks for responding. Could you post a link to the Foundation, so that those we want to help, can?
p.s. I have often written about special places. Back in the day, I thought it would help protect them - but that was when the internet was in its infancy. Now. Welll, I'm sure that you know.

Here's my piece on the perils of writing about relatively unknown and thoroughly wonderful places: https://matadornetwork.com/change/ash-springs-sweetest-places-always-get-trashed/
oh this is a heartbreaking piece
Thank you. I imagine you know many more heart-breaking stories. There is a postscript to the Ash Springs story: It has been officially closed. https://www.blm.gov/visit/ash-springs-wildlife-area#:~:text=The%20Ash%20Springs%20Recreation%20Site%20located%20in%20Lincoln%20County%2C%20Nevada,species%20and%20BLM%20sensitive%20species.
